When DA leader Mmusi Maimane arrived at Port Elizabeth’s KwaDwesi township yesterday, he came across angry ANC supporters who had been protesting over the ANC’s councillor candidate lists.
A group of about 30 residents had been protesting along the R75 leading to Uitenhage since the early morning.
There were remnants of burnt tyres and rocks in the street and there was a heavy police presence.
The protesters said they were angry about the ANC’s lists which featured councillors who were not chosen by the community.
They sang and chanted while Maimane, Nelson Mandela Bay mayoral candidate Athol Trollip and hundreds of DA supporters gathered for a meeting at Barayi Street.
Maimane said the party was aiming to take charge of the metro and bring about change.
“We want to govern here because the people need a better government,” Maimane said.
“It is quite clear they need change that will move this city forward, change that delivers services , creates jobs in this community and ultimately makes sure we eliminate corruption.”
Maimane listened to some of the service delivery complaints.
Mzikayise Zozi said residents had been voting for years and had not received proper service delivery.
“We have been staying here for years and we have nothing,” Zozi said.
“We have no clinic or hall – we have been voting all these years but we see no difference. “We really need change here.” Thokozile Hlumela, 42, said she hoped the DA would deliver on its promises, particularly for her children’s sake.
“All I need is a place to stay for me and my children and I hope the DA can assist me as I have been struggling with this issue for a while,” Hlumela said.
Maimane also visited Missionvale.
