I have never litigated against anyone before
DA mayoral candidate Athol Trollip is suing former DA PR councillor Knight Mali for R1-million in damages over Facebook posts that, Trollip claims, make him out to be a racist and human rights abuser, causing irreparable harm to his reputation.
Meanwhile, Mali, who plans to counter-sue, has hit back, accusing Trollip of “name-calling, cheap politics and political persecution”.
The bitter rift between the two came to a head in April when Mali defected to the ANC.
He had previously been suspended for bringing the DA into disrepute, but the Port Elizabeth High Court ordered in February that the party reinstate him.
Eastern Cape DA leader Trollip claims Mali defamed him with his Facebook posts on May 30, which read: “Our mayor [Danny Jordaan] cannot debate a fugitive, Athol Trollip, who is running away from his farm workers that accuse him of human rights abuse amongst other things.
“Paying them R80 a month, no running water nor toilets for decades, illegally evicted from the farm. “The list goes on … “The irony is that during that debate, Danny went to attend commemoration event of the Pepco 3 who were brutalized & slaughtered by apartheid police & army which Athol Trollip was a member of!
“So you reduce Danny to fugitives and apartheid machinery.”
