A suspected robber was arrested while two others are on the run after a meat delivery truck was hijacked near Swartkops yesterday.
The 63-year-old truck driver was shot in the leg when when he was ambushed as he stopped to drop off an order.
Police spokeswoman Colonel Priscilla Naidu said the owner of the store had noticed a commotion at the truck.
He alerted the company, who in turn notified the police.
“[Information about] the hijacked truck was immediately circulated on police channels,” Naidu said.
“The truck was later spotted when it drove straight past a police vehicle on the Kleinskool road.”
Police gave chase, leading the driver into the Kwa Dwesi area, where the men abandoned the truck and fled into nearby bushes.
“One of the suspects was later arrested while hiding in the bush, but the other two managed to escape.”
Naidu said the search for the two men who escaped was ongoing.
“It is not yet known if the other two had the firearms or if the arrested man had thrown the firearm into the bushes before his arrest,” she said.
The suspect will appear in the Motherwell Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.
The injured driver was taken to hospital for treatment.
