getimage (9)THE story of the Marikana shooting of miners is up for an Emmy.

The documentary, Miners Shot Down, about the Marikana massacre and produced by filmmaker Rehad Desai, scored a nomination in the documentary category for the International Emmy nominations.

Two other South African productions also got the nod.

M-Net’s MasterChef South Africa is nominated in the reality, or “non- scripted” category, while StarSat’s Puppet Nation ZA was nominated in the comedy category.

South Africa and Angola are the only African countries that received nominations on Monday night.

A total of 40 nominees from 19 countries are competing in 10 categories for International Emmys, established to honour excellence in TV programming outside the US.

South Africa’s three nominees will have to wait until November 23 before knowing whether they are successful.

Earlier this year, Debora Patta was nominated for a news Emmy for her work as the Africa correspondent for the American TV network CBS on their show, CBS Evening News.

Britain leads the way in the International Emmy awards, picking up a nomination for actor Sheridan Smith and a special award for Downton Abbey writer and creator Julian Fellowes.

British nominations will be competing for seven titles across the board. Brazil received five nominations.

“Every year, the international television community competes to be recognised for excellence on the International Emmy’s global stage,” International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences president Bruce Paisner said.
