Cut carbs and eat real food, PE summit told

PARENTS should refrain from giving their babies sugar right from the start of their lives, Professor Tim Noakes said yesterday during an address at the Future of Health Summit held in the Feather Market Centre in Port Elizabeth.

“To summarise, parents should eliminate all sugar from day one, drastically reduce refined carbohydrates and eat real food,” he said.

Noakes said it was important for people to make the mindshift from counting calories to counting carbohydrates.

“What we do know is that traditional diets offering only a moderate restriction of carbohydrates do not work. You must cut your carbohydrate consumption to 50 grams a day.”

Noakes said he believed insulin resistance was the most important and undiagnosed condition in the world today.

He said for true change, doctors and nutritionists who offered traditional diet advice for decades should apologise.
