FOLLOWERS of the Hindu faith descended on the Malabar Community Centre yesterday for the Festival of Lights (Diwali) celebration.
Hundreds of festival-goers were treated to a variety of food, traditional Indian clothing and a cultural show.
The festival started with a procession led by a chariot which moved through the streets of Malabar. Festival organiser Vinash Indarjee said the festival was a huge success.
“It is wonderful to see so many people supporting and showing interest in our faith,” Indarjee said.
All funds collected will be donated to a number of charities.
Organisers of the festival will donate R20 000 to the Food for Life project. The project is endorsed by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (Iskcon), a non-profit organisation in Newton Park that feeds the needy.
