ELEVEN months after the Port Elizabeth Main Library was closed to the public to undergo maintenance work it is still unclear when it will reopen.
The municipality needs a further R7-million to be able to finish off the first phase of renovations and ensure the building is safe for staff and the public.
It has offered library services at Kwantu Towers since October, at a cost to ratepayers of R7 500 a month.
In a report to the sports, recreation, arts and culture portfolio committee, which met yesterday, executive director Noxolo Nqwazi said about R20-million was needed for the first two phases of the refurbishment.
For the first phase, the municipality needs R12.5-million. It has managed to secure R3.6-million from Bhisho and R2-million from its own coffers.
The heritage buildingsuffered water damage during heavy rains in 2013.
