Surfer Josh Enslin will take his love for the ocean to whole new level when he tackles the Guinness World Record for the longest surfing session today.
Enslin, 30, who has been an avid surfer since the age of eight, will attempt the feat at the Pipe at Pollok Beach starting at midday. The record, which stands at 29 hours and 27 minutes, is held by American surfer Ben Shaw.
In the Cyoh Guinness World Record Attempt, Enslin aims to have broken the 30-hour mark when he finally exits the water at about 6pm tomorrow, after catching a wave every five minutes for the duration of the attempt. He said anything above the 30-hour mark would be a bonus.
His surfing club, Cyoh Surf Club, will also host a charity drive and hand out old wetsuits, blankets and canned foods to underprivileged surfers afterwards.
Dedicated surfer Enslin says his passion for the waves started at an early age.
“Growing up in St Francis Bay, I naturally spent most of my time outdoors, catching waves and just enjoying life. I have been surfing for the last 22 years. I have always loved the ocean and I am proud to say that I eat, sleep, breathe surfing,” he said.
He learned about the world record in May and applied for it. He received confirmation of his application three months later and started his final preparations.
He remains silently optimistic about the attempt, saying he is just excited the day has finally arrived.
He will be aiming to catch about 300 waves during the session and says he has a strict timeline which he will have to monitor very closely.
“My main focus will be on having fun. The support of my family and friends will be of utmost importance, especially those who will be sticking around for the graveyard shift.”
Enslin has regularly kept up to date with weather applications and sites, and believes he will not be dealt any nasty surprises.
The Eastern Cape regional manager for Billabong SA, he said he had worked hard to prepare both mentally and physically to undertake the mammoth task.
For every hour that he surfs, he will have a five-minute refreshment and toilet break.
