Operation Fiela continues to make inroads in the fight against the proliferation of drug crimes in the Nelson Mandela Bay area. The operation began on Saturday (14/11/2015) at 4pm and continued until 2am yesterday (15/11/2015) morning .
Five people aged between 25 and 50 were arrested and charged for dealing in drugs and being in possession of drugs and of suspected stolen property. Drugs to the value of R50 000 were confiscated, along with an undisclosed amount of cash and three flat-screen TVs. Three firearms, one magazine and eighteen live rounds of ammunition were recovered. All the suspects will appear in court soon.
Altogether 155 people, 44 vehicles and 40 buildings and premises were searched in Port Elizabeth.
The high police visibility during Operation Fiela was also present in Uitenhage and Kamesh. It started at Uitenhage and Kamesh on Friday(13/11/2015) at 8pm and continued until 4am on Saturday(14/11/2015).
Five people aged between 28 and 37 years were arrested for driving under the influence of liquor in Uitenhage and a man of 29 was arrested for possession of stolen goods. A 36-year-old was arrested for possession of dagga. All the suspects were due to appear in the Uitenhage Magistrate’s Court today on charges ranging from driving under the influence of liquor, possession of suspected stolen goods and possession of dagga.
Traffic fines to the value of R4 000 were issued for driving without a valid license.
Altogether 70 vehicles and 20 persons were stopped and searched and three liquor premises were visited. No fines were issued, as the liquor outlets were in compliance with regulations.
In Kamesh three people between the age of 25 and 28 were arrested for possession of dagga. One suspect, aged 41, was arrested for the contravention of a court order.
Traffic fines to the value of R9 400 were issued for driving without a valid license.
248 people and 36 vehicles were stopped and searched and 12 premises including taverns were searched.
In Mthatha four people aged between 18 and 34 were arrested and four firearms, all pistols, with 34 rounds of ammunition, five magazines and two firearm holsters were confiscated. The suspects were arrested at Konqeni Location in the Bityi Administrative Area near Mthatha. The Operation started at 3am and continued until 7am on Sunday (15/11/2015) morning.
All the suspects were due to appear in the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court today on charges of possession of illegal firearms and ammunition.
“We are determined to make the communities safer from criminals and criminal activities. We are also committed to ridding our townships and villages of drugs that are destroying the lives of many young people and firearms which are used in commissioning of serious crimes,” said Major General Zamuthango Mki, Deputy Provincial Commissioner: Operations.
