Wages for workers in the domestic worker sector, which includes housekeepers, gardeners, nannies and domestic drivers, will be adjusted effective from December 1 this year.
Minister of Labour Mildred Oliphant said that in terms of Sectoral Determination 7, which determines minimum wages, working hours, number of leave days and termination rules for domestic workers, the minimum wages will be adjusted upwards for domestic workers who worked in Area A (major metropolitan areas) and Area B (areas not covered in Area A).
Area A employees who work more than 27 hours a week have their hourly rate adjusted to not less than R 11.44. And an employee who works less than 27 hours a week in Area A will not be paid less than R13.39 an hour.
For domestic workers in Area B who work for more than 27 hours a week the hourly rate will not be less than R10.23, and those who work less than 27 hours will not be paid less than R12.07 an hour.
The new determination will be effective until the end of November next year.
Sectoral determination covers the protection of workers in vulnerable areas of work.
