Police arrested a 27-year-old man at his Perffervile home in East London yesterday.
The arrest came after money from a stokvel went missing at his workplace.
It is alleged that one employee, who is a member of the stokvel, used to keep the member’s contributions in a box hidden in the ceiling.
Police interrogated the suspect who then took them to his home where he hid the money.
An amount of R26 900 was recovered out of the R32 300 that originally went missing.
The SAPS would like to warn members of the public, especially stokvel members, to avoid keeping large sums of money in their possessions during this time of the year as these types of crimes tend to be on the increase.
Cambridge Station Commander, Brig. Nomso Siganga, has also encouraged the public to approach the police for assistance towards their cash safety when they divide their contributions during this Festive season as cash robberies are on the increase.
