ANGRY parents at a Port Elizabeth primary school say pupils as young as seven were told they would have to find new schools unless their parents forked out R800 in registration fees.
Walmer West Primary School says the furore was the result of incorrect wording being used in a letter.
The adults claim their children were told they would have to find new schools if their parents could not come up with the money – despite already being pupils at the school.
Walmer West Primary has apologised, with principal Johann Oosthuizen saying the school was only trying to confirm its numbers early due to a very long waiting list.
“The letter was a bit misleading. The wrong terminology was used and for that I must apologise to our parents. This was never about the money. It was about making 100% sure parents are committed to their children returning to the school next year.”
