Saturday, December 5 will mark two years since the death of former president, Nelson Mandela.
This weekend, political parties, religious institutions and foundations will celebrate his life with prayer, song, tributes and walks all over the country.
These include:
• On Saturday, the Nelson Mandela Foundation will partner with the Market Theatre to host an artist tribute called “Letters from Mandela”. This will include music, dance and recitals from Madiba’s letters. “Letters from Mandela aims to find some of the warmest moments of Mandela – the man, the father, the son, the comrade and the son of the African soil,” the foundation said.
• In the former president’s hometown of Qunu in the Eastern Cape, there will be a marathon and symbolic service on Saturday. It will be attended members of his family, the Eastern Cape government and local residents. To mark his 27 years in prison and the years of his life, the organisers also plan to release 27 doves and light 95 candles.
• The African National Congress in the Western Cape will commemorate his life during a memorial service for Sarah Carneson, which will be attended by ANC deputy secretary general Jessie Duarte.
• On Sunday, the St George’s Cathedral marks the anniversary of Mandela’s death with an interfaith evening prayer service from 18:00. Archbishop Thabo Makgoba of Cape Town will speak at the service.
• On Saturday, 12 December, the Nelson Mandela Foundation will partner with the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation in the Gauteng Province to co-host the second Nelson Mandela Remembrance Walk in Pretoria. The walk covers the route from 1 Military Hospital to the Union Buildings, which is now part of the City of Tshwane’s Heritage Route.
• And on Tuesday, December 15 the foundation is hosting another dialogue titled “Imagining Futures”. Panelists include poet and rapper Boitumelo ‘Tumi’ Molekane, businesswoman Trudi Makhaya and student leader Nompendulo Mkhatshwa.
