Minister and mayor help clean up Walmer township

They were joined by Nelson Mandela Bay deputy mayor Bicks Ndoni, municipal officials and thousands of Walmer residents.

A number of provincial executive committee members also attended.

Sisulu also took time out to visit Tomi Jantjies and his wife Maria, who got a new house on Monday.

The Jantjies are among the first beneficiaries of a new human settlements project in Walmer Q that will see 189 houses handed over before the end of the month.

Sisulu said: “I have invited members of parliament so they can come and see the progress we are making in Nelson Mandela Bay.

“We will clean this area with our volunteers and the youth brigade.”

Sisulu said she hoped that by the end of this month the last house would be handed out.

Walmer resident Thembeka Matebese, 60, said: “It is very important for our area to be clean for the sake of our children, who may pick up dirty things while playing in the streets.”
