PARENTS have been advised to beat the rush and buy uniforms as early as possible before school starts on January 13.
Some uniform suppliers have also warned that they have limited stock.
Lené Botha, of Schultz in Newton Park, said while prices varied depending on schools, a check gym or school dress for a Grade 1 pupil would cost in the region of R335, while a plain dress would cost between R245 and R309.
“A short-sleeved white shirt for a girl will cost R100 and R103 for a boy. It will cost R115 for a white shirt with a school badge. A pair of grey shorts costs in the region of R131.”
A school blazer costs between R550 and R595, while a V-necked jersey costs around R220. A pair of long grey socks with stripes in the school’s colours costs R49, while white school socks are R27 a pair. Schultz also stocks tracksuits ranging between R385 and R429, golf shirts between R109 and R182 and white shorts at R105. School shoes range from R238 to R319.
Serina Meyer, owner of Estelle’s Schoolwear and Pro-Ecclesia in Uitenhage, said:“We stock uniforms for 67 schools in the Uitenhage, Groendal, Kwanobuhle, Kirkwood and Addo areas, so we see thousands of children this time of the year.”
She said tunics for Grade 1 girls ranged currently between R225 and R275, while school skirts were R160. Coloured short-sleeved shirts are R80 and badges are available separately.
A school jersey costs from R140 and a blazer from R550.
Korsten mother Liscka Hendricks said her daughter, Tiyaylah, six, was starting Grade 1 at Moregrove Primary in January. A full set of school wear came to R2 800.
“There is also a second-hand clothing shop where the items are available, but because she is starting Grade 1 we believed she needed to have all new clothing. We started our shopping at the start of October to ensure that we got everything early,” Hendricks said.
Nandipa Tanda said she had paid R2 200 for the complete school uniform for her daughter, Liyema, 12, who starts Grade 8 at Ethembeni High School in January.
“I think this is really affordable, based on the quality of the clothing. She will be able to wear it for the next five years.
“She is getting the uniform, jersey, blazer, tie, tracksuit, pullover, socks and a pair of Grasshopper shoes. I believe parents must shop early and compare prices to see where they can save,” she said.
