Rare photo collection of 1947 SA royal tour

A PORT Elizabeth man who discovered a treasure trove of photographs in an album dating back to the 1947 royal tour of South Africa in his home has put the album up for sale on the online classified adverts site Gumtree.

The album includes personal mementos and rare photographs of then reigning monarch King George VI and a young Princess Elizabeth.

Mario Luiters, 40, of Lorraine, discovered the 68-yearold leather-bound album 11 years ago in the cellar of his previous home.

King George VI and his wife Queen Elizabeth paid a visit to the city as part of a royal tour along with their daughters – princesses Elizabeth (the reigning queen) and Margaret. About 26 000 residents turned up at St George’s Park to greet them.

It was the current queen’s first official tour and she also celebrated her 21st birthday in Cape Town during the trip.
