Dyslexia sufferer gets bachelor’s degree pass

TENACITY and lots of encouragement from her teachers have paid off for Kabega Park pupil Catherine Jeal, who refused to let a debilitating disorder get the better of her.

Catherine, 21, a St Marks Community School pupil, has battled with severe dyslexia for as long as she can remember but yesterday found out that not only had she passed her matric, but she had done so with a bachelor’s degree pass.

She was also named as one of her school’s top achievers.

Catherine said yesterday she had been afraid she would never be able to finish school as the daily struggle she underwent as a dyslexia sufferer – problems with reading, writing, spelling and even speaking – had been a constant stumbling block to success.

“It’s such an amazing feeling to be honoured in this way,” she said.

“It was tough at times, but I’m just glad I made it this far and it is now complete.”

She walked away with a degree pass as a result of the marks she received for the seven subjects she wrote.
