THE launch of this year’s theatrical calendar is set to take place tomorrow with the annual Twelfth Night Awards ceremony at the Port Elizabeth Musical and Dramatic Society’s (Pemads) Little Theatre.

Punted as a night for celebration of the arts in Port Elizabeth, the evening promises to be a delightful function for everyone in attendance.

Linda-Louise Swain, of Pemads, said the event would look back at the success of last year and act as a prelude to what this year had in store for theatre-goers.

“The awards ceremony will follow some top-class vocal entertainment by the very talented Amber Burnhams and Dieter Heydenrych,” Swain said.

Irish dancers from the McWilliams Academy of Dance would also perform.

This year will see nominations from acclaimed Pemads production The Ex-Factor as well as from Music! Movies! Magic! – a collaboration between Pemads and Port Elizabeth’s Gilbert and Sullivan Society.

Nominated for the best director award for her work as director of The Ex-Factor, Yolande Farrow said she felt very honoured to be nominated.

“My prime focus is sheer enjoyment [of the arts], not the awards,” she said.

The other nominee for the prestigious best director award and nominee for best supporting actress, Rose Cowpar, said she was more excited about collaborating with Pemads on Music! Movies! Magic! – for which she is a co-nominee in the same category with Farrow.

“I am proud to be associated with the show . . . it went so very well,” she said.

Cowpar, who has been nominated twice previously for a Twelfth Night Award for her work in Calendar Girls and Snow White, said she was looking forward to catching up with everyone.

“It would be a nice surprise to win [but] everyone deserves an award,” she said.

Best supporting actor award nominee Tim Collier said he had enjoyed working on Music! Movies! Magic! – which was his fifth show last year.

He said winning an award would be great recognition.

Collier is to perform in the upcoming Shakespearean play The Tempest at the open-air Manville Theatre at St George’s Park next month.

The Twelfth Night Awards ceremony will be held at the Little Theatre in Belmont Terrace in Central at 6pm for 6.30pm tomorrow.

Tickets at R30 will be available at the door.

A cheese and wine reception will be held after the ceremony.
