A PORT Elizabeth family lost all their possessions in a fire which gutted their Schauderville home on Sunday.

Speaking at the City Hall yesterday where mayor Danny Jordaan met the family, homeowner Elian Lepico, 43, said they did not know how the fire started.

She said she was woken up by a neighbour screaming about a fire.

“I ran outside to check where the fire was and, to my surprise, the back yard shack was burning,” Lepico said.

The fire then spread to the main house, destroying everything.

“I lost all my belongings, such as my furniture and personal documents,” she said.

Jordaan said he was relieved there had been no deaths or serious injuries and warned residents to beware of flammable items in the home that could fuel fires.

“We have to ask the people of the metro to be very, very cautious. We have to emphasise to the people that it is a danger and a serious matter,” he said.

The family will in the meantime receive a temporary house structure with electricity, food parcels and other necessities.
