Family wait for clue to sailors’ disappearance

AFTER a year drifting out at sea, a hull believed to be that of a missing catamaran is being towed in just off Simonstown. The upturned hull was spotted floating 113 nautical miles off Port Elizabeth on January 14 by a Brazilian naval vessel.

SunSail RC044-978, which left Cape Town for Thailand on December 14 2014, was carrying crew members Anthony Murray, 59, Reginald Robertson, 60, and Jaryd Payne, 21.

The men were on a working trip to Thailand where they were meant to deliver the catamaran for US-based leisure business Tui Marine.

Murray’s sister-in-law, Diane Coetzer, said: “The hull will have a story to tell.

“We hope this helps us gain some knowledge on the journey it took from the time [contact was lost] to the most recent sighting.”

Coetzer reported the catamaran missing to the Marine Rescue Coordination Centre after the three men were not heard from for some time.

“They usually checked in with me once a week,” she said.
