RHODES University in Grahamstown has been chosen as a world centre to develop climate-change education aimed at preparing for the future – and has been awarded R13-million to carry out the pioneering work.

The International Social Science Council (ISSC), which is based in France, has announced the funding of three knowledge networks as part of a new initiative.

The networks involve nine partners from Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America.

The environmental learning research centre at Rhodes will lead the African network.

Other partners on the continent are Malawi, Zimbabwe and Ethiopia.

Rhodes project leader Professor Heila Lotz-Sisitka, of the global change and social learning systems division, said that of an initial 500 applications received by the ISSC, 40 were granted seed funding for the development of proposals.
