NEW Brighton residents threatened yesterday to burn down a municipal office if a paving project was not completed.
About 250 residents blocked Ferguson and Ntshekisa roads with burning tyres for most of the morning, but police managed to clear the roads before lunch.
The residents claim paving was meant to be laid around nine cul-desacs, off Masangwana Street, but only four have been paved.
A resident, who declined to be named, said: “We went to the municipality to ask and were told the paving would only be done in Ward 25 and not Ward 14.
“It is very confusing because we are talking about one street.”
The resident said the community needed to be told why the paving could not be done in two different wards. Asked why they had resorted to closing the road, the resident said: “This is the only language [the municipality] understands.
