Business leaders’ pleas heeded after years of vehicle damage
OUR prayers have finally been answered. That was the feeling from organised business and the citrus industry in the Sundays River Valley area following the news that the Eastern Cape government would start revamping the decaying Addo Road this year.
The 40km stretch of road on the R335 – which links Motherwell to Addo – is riddled with potholes, causing massive financial losses to the citrus industry which transports its produce to Port Elizabeth for export.
The citrus industry in the Sundays River Valley region contributes about R1.5-billion to the province’s GDP.
The Business Chamber and Sundays River Citrus Company have been pleading with the government for years to fix the road, the main link for exports between the Kirkwood/Addo citrus industry and the harbour.
The provincial government announced last week that R5billion would be pumped into fixing and resurfacing roads in the province.
Roads and Public Works MEC Thandiswa Marawu said some of that money would be used for fixing the Addo Road, starting in April.
