Vastrap residents today closed all roads leading to the area saying Mayor Danny Jordaan has failed to respond to their grievances over housing in the area.
Police are attempting to disperse the residents, who have burnt tyres to block Stanford, Missionvale and Old Uitenhage Roads.
According to reports residents have divided themselves up into small groups to block off the different areas.
School children in the area were sent home as teachers can not get to schools and representatives of the Eastern Cape Department Of Human Settlements have been sent away by protesters who are demanding to meet with Jordaan.
Police are firing rubber bullets and using teargas to disperse protesters.
