Recruiting bone marrow donors, sprucing up wards among efforts

HELPING others just seems to be in the blood of The Herald GM Citizen of the Year finalist Zodwa Dube, nominated for the Igazi Foundation’s Marrow Masakhane campaign.

Having survived cancer, Dube first went to help the blood cancer charity after reading about Dr Neil Littleton’s difficulty in getting the Port Elizabeth Provincial Hospital’s M7 ward cleaned three years ago.

Cleaning floors was just the start. This year she is spearheading a drive for more black stem cell donors under the Marrow Masakhane banner.

“I have been cancer-free for 13 years, but for a long time I did not speak about my cancer. It was very painful, very difficult to talk about, except with my husband,” she said last week.
