Other opposition parties also upset at demarcation board’s proposals
THE countdown to the 2016 local government elections has begun – and political parties are fighting any proposals that could hamper their efforts to gain control of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality next year.
The Municipal Demarcation Board has come under fire from the DA and COPE for its proposed changes to some ward boundaries.
The number of registered voters in ANC strongholds – as contained in the board’s proposals – is significantly lower than in DA-held wards.
Also, areas such as Algoa Park, Schauderville and Sydenham – which are DA wards – will each be split.
This could see residents in those areas having to drive or walk long distances to cast their ballots within their new proposed voting districts.
