Police reportedly used stun grenades to quell protests at the University of Cape Town (UCT) and at least eight students were said to have been detained overnight.
According to UCT vice-chancellor, Dr Max Price, the university is in the process of obtaining an interdict, and will bring criminal charges against those involved.
