NMMU students affiliated to the South African Students’ Congress (Sasco) were taken in for questioning in Port Elizabeth yesterday.
Five students were questioned at the Humewood Police Station after a case was opened against them by the Democratic Alliance Student Organisation (Daso).
The charges include assault and intimidation after an altercation between the two groups on February 5.
Sasco president and Eastern Cape regional chairman Lufefe Mkutu was one of the five taken to the station.
Mkutu said both parties were involved in the physical altercation during a meeting about student residences. Daso chairman Azola Mboniswa said: “We don’t want to speak too much about the matter.
The case is now with the police.” NMMU communications and client liaison director Lebogang Hashatse confirmed the students were taken to Humewood Police Station.
