Student pastors have called on students across the country to put aside their differences and work together to find an amicable solution to the current impasse.

“We need to speak a message of reconciliation, a message of love and hope.

A message that will help us as young people not to go back to how things were 20 years ago,” said Khoatheli Sello.

Sello, alongside Sylvester Underhay led a prayer session with students from all races in front of the University of Pretoria on Tuesday as Afrikaans-speaking people marched to demand that the language remain at the university.

The pair, having studied at the university, said they were seriously affected by what was going on. Students have been protesting for days demanding a review of the language policy at the institution.

“This affects us and our country. We felt it necessary to make a united front and say South Africa let’s hold hands and build our nation,” said Sello.

Underhay said what was happening was actually going against what those who fought for democracy wanted to achieve.

“Twenty years ago all the people fought on behalf of all students to study in their languages but what we are having now is a regression from that,” he said.

Underhay added that the country could not afford to take a step back from the great strides made.
