TWO houses were vandalised after a scuffle broke out between two rival groups in Veeplaas, Port Elizabeth, yesterday.

About 100 people – with some wearing ANC branded T-shirts – accused UDM Ward 30 councillor Mandla Faltein of only giving jobs to members of his political party.

Faltein’s office was closed by the protesting residents.

The group also tried to shut down a construction site where the municipality is building a centre that will cater for small businesses in the area. But a group of UDM supporters formed a human shield to prevent the site’s closure.

A fight then broke out, with people punching each other. Two houses were damaged during the scuffle.

Noziphiwo Telse, 29, who claims to live in the ward, said since the UDM won the by-election in August some residents had been sidelined when it came to job allocations.

“We no longer have community meetings in this ward. Only UDM members are called for meetings. Our councillor Mandla Faltein does not care,” Telse said.

But Faltein said the protesting residents did not even live in his ward.
