HAPPIER TIMES: Marzane and Charl Meyer

A MUNICIPAL assistant director is fighting for his life in hospital after being brutally beaten in a brazen daylight robbery in St George’s Park, Port Elizabeth.

Municipal parks assistant director and principal horticulturist Charl Meyer, 41, who is still in the intensive care unit at St George’s Hospital, was attacked in the park while leaving his offices three weeks ago.

Detectives closed the case within a week of the attack, without following up leads.

The municipal security directorate investigation unit has since been roped in to assist with the investigation.

Meyer was attacked by two men while leaving his office in St George’s Park.

A fight ensued and Meyer was badly beaten and robbed of his watch.

Meyer was admitted to hospital for treatment and discharged shortly afterwards, but was readmitted two days later.

The initial docket opened was for common assault, but three weeks later Meyer is still fighting for his life.

Yesterday, detectives reopened the case and changed the charge to assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

A copy of the original statement taken by police officers a day after the attack – which The Herald has seen – paints a picture of Meyer being confused, but states he had seen the two attackers in the park before.
