WITH the weather playing ball over the Easter weekend, thousands of people packed the Port Elizabeth beachfront for the annual Splash Festival.

While wet weather only threatened to put a damper on the event on Saturday, the four-day festival was a success, with only a few complaints.

Soul Good project manager Darren Mungur said with all the attractions on offer, he was happy with this year’s event.

“With all the sports that were introduced and content that was produced, I can say without a doubt that this is one of the best years of the festival,” he said.

Traditionally a family orientated event, there were enough attractions to ensure visitors of all ages had a good few hours of fun.

With the festival offering everything from children’s toys to arts and crafts, clothing and food stalls, visitors were spoilt for choice from the more than 200 stall owners. “It has been a great weekend. Thousands of visitors have been coming to see what the festival has on offer,” Mungur said.

Music lovers were treated to a host of performances, with a ’90s themed music series featuring Winnie Khumalo, Bricks, Alaska and DJ Zintle on Friday night. A DJ competition and a fireworks display were held on Saturday night.

Other attractions included deep-sea angling, beach volleyball, jet-ski rides and theme park rides.

Anand Naicker, 39, of Malabar, said his children had a blast on the theme park rides.

“I think the festival was organised very well. The weather was good and the attractions on offer were quite impressive,” he said.

Sharfaa September, 16, of Malabar, visited the beachfront on Saturday.

“It was kind of boring, because all you do is walk around and see the same stuff,” she said.

“The stage had good entertainment, but everything else was pretty much the same.”

Bloemfontein stall owner Masimba Shamu, 30, who sells wooden and metal wire crafts, said he had made many sales.

“It was very well organised this year. I will definitely be coming back next year.”
