FORTY-six farm workers were injured 44 others walked away unscathed after the truck in which they were travelling rolled down an embankment between Addo and Colchester.

According to medics on the scene, about 90 workers, travelling to a farm, were inside the 120-seat truck, at the time.

Ten passengers were pulled to safety by emergency workers who abseiled down the 15m embankment while the majority of the passengers managed to climb up to the gravel road.

Nelson Mandela Bay Emergency Medical Services head Ashwell Botha said the closed trailer was towed by a truck when it veered off the embankment and rolled.

“The majority of the injuries ranged from back and limb pains to abrasions and lacerations,” he said.

Police spokesman Warrant Officer Dumile Gwavu said a case of reckless and negligent was opened.

“The truck driver said a bakkie was approaching from the opposite direction on the road prompting the truck to pull over to give way,” Gwavu said.
