NELSON Mandela Bay DA councillor Chris Roberts, who is accused of uttering a racial slur at last month’s closed council meeting, can be heard on tape saying what sounds like the word “bobbejaan” in reference to UDM councillor Mongameli Bobani.
Sworn affidavits from DA councillors who listened to the recording will form part of the evidence to be considered by the party’s highest disciplinary body, which will determine Roberts’s fate. The Herald has heard the recording. Roberts has previously apologised for any offence caused, but insisted that he was misheard. He claimed to have called Bobani, “babobani” in jest.
The July 31 incident was sparked when mayor Danny Jordaan mispronounced Bobani’s name during his speech in council.
