Pilot launch in May and full service from June 30 – but cash needed
NELSON Mandela Bay acting city manager Johann Mettler must find R15.5-million from different departments to fund the first batch of metro police expected to hit the streets next month.
The council will thrash out a plan today to get the long-awaited service up and running.
But to function it needs the additional injection of R15.5-million for operational costs, including salaries, until June 30, Mettler’s report to the council states.
The municipality plans to roll out a pilot service in Helenvale and Motherwell before spreading the force across the city.
The target date for the pilot launch is May 15 and an official launch parade is planned to take place in June at the Gelvandale Stadium.
The city previously said the new police force would be launched on April 30.
In his report, Mettler states that the expected date for the delivery of uniforms, insignia and protective equipment is April 30.
Twelve vehicles will also be rebranded by the end of the month.
Mettler’s report states: “It can be confirmed that the required amount of R15 565 757 is not included in the 2015-16 Adjustments Budget that was approved by the council on 22 February 2016.
“As this amount cannot be sourced within the safety and security directorate, it is recommended that the required amount be sourced within the budgets of other directorates.
