Late-night stores urged to be extra cautious

KENTUCKY Fried Chicken at Five Ways in Cape Road, Port Elizabeth, was robbed by three people posing as customers on Tuesday night. This comes less than a week after the KFC in Heugh Road, Walmer, was robbed by men who climbed through the drivethrough window shortly before closing time.

The Five Ways robbery took place at about 9.45pm after two men and a woman ordered a meal.

The robbers fled with about R15 000 in cash.

Atlas Security operations manager Monty Montgomery said the three entered the shop shortly before closing and ordered a meal.

“All three then left the shop with their meal. Less than five minutes later they returned and held the cashier at gunpoint,” he said.

“The robbers forced the staff to lie on the ground while ransacking the tills looking for cash.”

During the robbery, a motorist drove through the drive-through section and saw staff lying face down on the ground.

“The motorist drove off and spotted a police van further down the road,” Montgomery said.

“By that stage the suspects had fled and the staff had pressed the panic button.

“My armed response team and police arrived within minutes.”

Montgomery said a search was done of the area but there was no sign of the robbers.
