UNATHI Msengana, the embattled Idols SA judge, lives to fight another day.
While she has been suspended by the SABC from her Metro FM breakfast show, she has been forgiven by M-Net’s Mzansi Magic, the station that broadcasts the reality singing competition on which she serves as a judge.
The broadcaster said yesterday it had engaged with Msengana extensively regarding her recent use of offensive language in a direct message to a follower on Twitter. This was after she weighed in on the language policy at Stellenbosch University on the radio show.
“In light of the fact that Ms Msengana has expressed her remorse over the incident, she will continue in her role as an Idols SA judge.
“M-Net wishes to reiterate that it does not condone the use of offensive language and will take more serious action should such an incident occur again,” it said.
Meanwhile, Msengana issued a statement yesterday about the incident.
“My opinion [on the language policy at Stellenbosch University] became the subject of a Twitter debate,” she said.
“Unfortunately some of the commentary criticised me in ways that I felt badly violated my personal life and my personal beliefs.
“To be cast as an advocate for rape, gender inequality and homophobia when I am passionate about ending these social ills, was extremely shocking.
“As a result I reacted by engaging directly with a Twitter follower. However, as upset as I was at the time, I should not have used offensive language. I . . . publicly apologise.”
