THE bail conditions of a driver accused of killing a teenage sea cadet and injuring another on the Port Elizabeth beachfront were relaxed yesterday.
William Taute, 27, allegedly killed
, 16, and seriously injured Lorren Abrahams, 20, when he smashed into them in his VW Amarok in Humewood Road.
The young women were on their way to the Navy Sea Cadets training base at about 7pm on February 26.
The charges Taute faces include a count of culpable homicide in respect of Jaydene and attempted murder in respect of her friend.
Yesterday, Taute appeared in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court where his lawyer, Alwyn Griebenouw, brought two applications to have his bail conditions amended.
“My client is residing with his parents on their farm in Vryburg [in North West province]. Part of the bail conditions is that he report to the Vryburg police station twice a week. “This is 60km from their farm,” Griebenouw said. “I request this condition be removed entirely. “The second is that the next court appearance is scheduled for June 10.
“I would like him to be able to miss that appearance, have a warrant of arrest issued and have it stand over until the next appearance considering the 13-hour drive they have to take and the fact that the investigation is still in its early stages,” Griebenouw told the court.
State prosecutor Samantha Regnard had no objections to the requests.
Magistrate Esti Pretzer granted both applications and postponed the case for further investigation.
