NELSON Mandela Bay mayor Danny Jordaan and his Buffalo City counterpart are likely to retain their positions after the August elections – that is if the ANC wins the polls in both metros .
The ANC’s provincial leadership decided to reinstate Buffalo City’s Alfred Mtsi’s name to the governing party’s proportional representation (PR) list which was sent to party headquarters at Luthuli House on Friday.
This was after Mtsi was left out of the initial list by delegates at the WB Rubusana region’s list conference last month.
His omission is understood to have been motivated by factional battles within the ANC-led tripartite alliance in BCM.
Mtsi’s name is now sixth on the party’s PR list.
Several sources also confirmed that Jordaan topped the party’s list for his metro.
ANC provincial secretary Oscar Mabuyane confirmed yesterday that ANC provincial leaders had intervened, and had added Mtsi’s name “to stabilise the region”.
Mtsi, an SA Communists Party leader, was among several SACP activists within the council who did not make the cut.
Mabuyane said the final decision about mayoral candidates would be decided between the regions, the province and national office. The decisions would be respected by all.
Regional leaders would be asked to nominate three names after the party had submitted its candidates’ list to the Independent Electoral Commission.
The mayoral candidate would be chosen from those, he said.
