PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma has received a preliminary briefing from Defence and Military Veterans Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula on the circumstances surrounding her transportation of a Burundian woman to South Africa in January 2014.

The minister became embroiled in controversy this month after she revealed that she had flown 22-year-old Michelle Wege – who the Sunday Times yesterday revealed was dating her late son – to South Africa on an air force jet.

Meanwhile, the DA has asked the public protector to investigate the case.

Last week, the minister said she flew Wege to South Africa after the young woman was arrested in Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, for trying to board a plane to South Africa on a false passport.

The Presidency yesterday said that Zuma was considering the matter and there would be no further comment at this stage.

The Sunday Times reported yesterday that MapisaNqakula’s late son was romantically involved with the Burundi woman.

In an interview with the Sunday Times this week, businessman Laurent Wege claimed his daughter was planning to marry Chumani‚ who was stabbed to death last October.

Wege also lifted the lid on a business relationship with the minister gone sour‚ and denied Mapisa-Nqakula’s claims that she had rescued Michelle from being abused by him.

This contradicted the reasons Mapisa-Nqakula gave last week‚ the Sunday Times said.
