Mozambican rhino poachers sentenced to 11 years

TWO Mozambican nationals believed to have snuck into the Kruger National Park in an attempt to poach a rhino have been sentenced to eleven years each behind bars.

According to police, Phinias Sithole,23, and France Nkuna,22, were convicted and sentenced at the White River Magistrate Court in Mpumalanga on Monday (01/09/2015).

Police spokesman, Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo, said that the conviction stems from their arrest in the Kruger National Park on 27 October, 2014.

“The pair was discovered by field rangers in the Lower Sabi section of the Kruger National Park,” he said.

Naidoo added that the nationals were armed with a hunting rifle and an axe, and that they were apprehended on the scene.

After being taken into custody, they were charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition as well as trespassing.

Sentencing as follows:

  •  five years imprisonment for possession of unlicensed firearm
  • five years imprisonment for unlawful possession of ammunition and
  • one year imprisonment for trespassing
