PORT Elizabeth parents are fearing for their children’s safety following reports about three men spotted in a car in front of Gelvan Park Primary School, allegedly taking pictures of pupils.

While pupils claim the occupants of the metallic-blue Ford Fiesta took their pictures, one of the men questioned by The Herald yesterday denied this.

Police met school principal Sinomia Lewis on Monday as a teacher who confronted the men was physically threatened.

“I have reported the matter to the authorities,” she said.

Lewis said the police had promised to patrol the area.

Police spokesman Alwin Labans said he was aware of the problem and police were patrolling.

“These guys are not working. They sit in the vehicle the whole day,” he said. The car, with Gauteng registration plates, has been spotted in St Lilia Street, adjacent to the Grade 1 block, for the past two weeks.

Grade 1 teacher Eleanor Swartz, 55, said: “I would see people walk over to the car and lean into the window.

“I monitor it throughout the day as it comes and then goes again.”

She said her pupils had told her the men had taken their pictures.
