Flanked by a councillor candidate who was shot at last week, a jovial ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe was welcomed with open arms in Port Elizabeth’s New Brighton township yesterday.
He slammed independent candidates in various wards in the city, saying their role was simply to split the vote. They had no interest in governance and would not govern anyway.
In efforts to drum up support for the highly contested August 3 election, Mantashe went on a walkabout, listening to scores of residents with complaints, from lack of services and decent houses to unemployment.
Mantashe was with former mayor Nceba Faku, council speaker Maria Hermans and ANC provincial executive member Andile Lungisa.
Also present was ward 15 ANC councillor candidate Celia Mtati, who escaped being shot by a gunman who entered her home in an attack some believe could be linked to the party’s controversial candidate-list process.
