About 250 Grade 11 and 12 pupils from Nelson Mandela Bay and surrounding areas will be exposed to various fields of science at this year’s Science Discovery Week at NMMU.

The week started yesterday and will end on Friday.

Faculty of science public relations intern Nolusindiso Hleko said the purpose of the annual Science Discovery Week was to introduce pupils to the fascinating fields of science in a fun and informal setting.

“One of the major benefits for pupils is getting exposed to the different science fields before they apply for tertiary education,” Hleko said.

“It is an opportunity for them to get more information to make a more informed decision when choosing a science course to study – because they will at least have a clear idea of what the course entails.”

Daily activities include visits to science faculty departments to participate in experiments.

Activities will take place in the departments of biochemistry and microbiology, chemistry, mathematics and applied mathematics, physics, computing sciences, statistics, botany, zoology, and geosciences.

“Discovery Week also provides an opportunity for pupils to be actively involved in performing experiments while gaining more knowledge on science,” Hleko said.

“This opportunity will be beneficial particularly to those pupils who go to schools that don’t have science labs in which to perform experiments, therefore having to base their science knowledge solely on theory.”
