Four other injured as state pensioners trampled in food, blankets stampede
An elderly Port Elizabeth woman suffered a horrific death when she was trampled in a stampede at a government department’s 10th anniversary celebrations.
Adding to the tragedy in Zwide at an event hosted by a cabinet minister, no one has come forward to identify the woman.
Yesterday, two other women – who were among four injured – told how they had been shoved and stomped on at South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) 10th anniversary celebrations as officials tossed blankets to thousands of people attending the event at the Dan Qeqe stadium on Wednesday night.
The two women’s legs were broken in the mayhem.
One of the other two injured women is still in hospital.

Angeline Ntekele, 86, of New Brighton, and Thandiwe Quwe, 67, of Soweto-on-Sea, said they had feared for their lives and it was only by the grace of God that they had made it out alive.
Police spokesman Captain Andre Beetge said there had been about 14 000 people at the celebrations, hosted by Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini.
A shaken Ntekele said the problem had started when an announcement was made that people would receive blankets and food parcels.
