SOUTH African national parks across the Eastern and Southern Cape will open their gates free of charge to visitors this week after the 10th annual National Parks Week was launched yesterday.

The campaign – first established in 2006 to showcase SANParks’ assets to visitors – will run until Friday. The Garden Route National Park (GRNP) activities for the week were launched in Harkerville, about 10km outside Plettenberg Bay, yesterday with an information session about the park’s conservation efforts, leisure and adventure activities, and business opportunities.

Acting park general manager Johan de Klerk said the initiative would be extended on the Garden Route to Saturday, which meant visitors would be able to enter all the park’s sections – spanning 150km from Wilderness to Tsitsikamma – free for this period.

He said other activities planned for the week included various “edutainment” trips around the Knysna estuary and guided tours into the Knysna forest, free access to selected hiking trails, picnics and information sessions.

Other parks in the region which will offer free access and other activities to the public this week include the Addo Elephant National Park, the Camdeboo National Park in Graaff-Reinet and the Mountain Zebra National Park in Cradock.
