MORE than 1 000 police officials and employees from around the country will be arriving in Port Elizabeth this week as part of a three-day police music festival, starting on Thursday.

Yesterday, police encouraged residents across the province to attend. Entrance is free.

The Police Music and Cultural Association (Polmusca) festival will begin at the Nelson Mandela Stadium from about 2pm with an opening ceremony. “The official opening will be preceded by sporting and other activities which will begin at about 11am,” event organiser Brigadier Marinda Mills said.

“An indigenous traditional dance competition will follow the official opening,” she said.

During the event, cultural exhibitions, traditional dancing, sporting events and a police parade will be held.

Crime awareness campaigns will also take place.

“We will be visiting schools and other community outreach centres to educate the public on crime awareness,” Mills said.

Police from around the country will take part in competitions including choral music, ballroom dancing, traditional dancing, exhibitions, and cookery displays.

The choir competition will start at 9am on Friday at the NMMU Missionvale campus.

It will continue until 6pm on Saturday.

Police commissioner General Riah Phiyega and Eastern Cape premier Phumulo Masualle are expected to attend.
