GENERATIONS of Grey High School men were celebrated yesterday at the school’s Annual Cadet Day, where boys marched in numerous parades.
The day began with parades including an inter-house drill competition, a promotion and trophy parade, and the main “retreat” parade.
Major Stephen van Niekerk said: “The age-old tradition dates back to the 1800s and gives the boys an opportunity to display themselves.
“The parades are very ceremonial … they help with discipline and give many of the boys a chance at being leaders because not everyone can be a prefect.”
Grey High School rector Neil Crawford said the school swells with pride with the treasured tradition of cadets.
A highlight of the day was the national salute given to former Grey cadet and matriculant of 1958 Edward Hurr, 76.
Hurr said: “It is a great thing to see that the school has kept up the tradition … the salute is very prestigious.”
Cadet and Grade 11 pupil, Lubabalo Dobela, 17, was promoted from a cadet to warrant officer.
Dobela said the promotion meant a lot to him.
“I did not think I stood a chance against the other guys because the training is very tough,” he said.
