Revenue collection rate improves – but tougher times on the horizon

IN a massive boost, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s cash position has significantly improved over the past three months, with the latest figures showing a whopping 116% revenue collection rate last month.

This is much higher than the metro’s target of 94%, which was set by the municipality for the 2015-16 financial year.

If the metro keeps this up, it could relieve the pressure on the city’s purse and boost service delivery. But the figure was set to drop substantially over the next couple of months, councillors sitting on the budget and treasury portfolio committee heard yesterday.

That caution was issued as the municipality wrote off almost R100-million owed by some of the city’s high-energy users for unpaid electricity bills and interest on the accounts.
