ALLEGED gang boss Shaun Ah Shene has appointed a new attorney to defend him and his wife when they return to court on charges of money laundering and the possession of stolen goods.
Ah Shene, 50, and his wife, Virginia, 49, appeared briefly yesterday in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court, where they appointed attorney Louis van Rensburg as their new legal representative.
Van Rensburg then asked magistrate Arno Strydom for the matter to be postponed to March 4 for him to prepare his new clients’ defence.
Speaking after court proceedings Ah Shene said his former attorney, Advocate Harold Grootboom, could not attend court due to health issues and he could not afford to have the trial delayed.
“The longer this case drags on, the more my business suffers. I want this to be over so I can go on with my life,” Ah Shene said.
The couple were arrested last year following an investigation which, according to the police, has stretched over the last decade.
Among the charges is the possession of stolen goods following a raid on the Ah Shenes’ home in 2008 when luxury watches, jewellery and electronics, allegedly linked to robberies and burglaries around Port Elizabeth, were found.
The Ah Shenes deny the allegations.
